Head of the Lake

When you prefer people-watching and lifeguards while you swim, choose from these three popular beaches. On the east side is Usher’s Park, a small sandy beach that’s perfect for young children. In the village is Shepard’s Park, where you can dive off the dock or wade at your leisure. Million Dollar Beach, at the base of the lake, is the largest of the three and provides a volley ball court and locker room.

Shelving Rock

Lake George, NY

Swim without the crowds at Shelving Rock on the east side of Lake George. Charming brooks and a natural waterfall will banish any thoughts of concession stands and T-shirt shops.

Taylor Pond

Ausable Forks, NY

Escape civilization at this primitive sand beach (a mile hike from the campground) that is surrounded by 9,000 acres of New York State wilderness. You also can rent a canoe or rowboat. Call the caretaker at 518-647-5250 to check availability.

Batten Kill River

Shushan, NY

A secluded swimming spot in lower Washington County offers clean, deep water that you can jump into from a rope swing. Lolling on a nearby sandy area is relaxing, too.

Bear Slide

Lake Luzerne, NY

It more about sliding than swimming here, though you can relax in the shallow pool at the base of this natural slide. Shorts or jeans are appropriate dress, and the cautious may want to don a helmet and mouth guard
