Northwest Bay, accessible from a parking lot near Tongue Mountain on Route 9N (a few miles north of Bolton Landing), offers a narrow channel filled with wildlife before you exit onto the bay, which sees little boat traffic compared with the rest of the lake.
Located off of Averyville Road in North Elba, the Chubb River is a winding creek that offers views of the High Peaks as welll as a chance to paddle through wetlands and and see a variety of birds in the spring and summer. To launch, drive about 1.25 miles from the corner of Old Military Road away from the village. The trailhead is unmarked and located on the left hand side just past a bridge over the Chubb.

The NYS Horicon Boat Launch at the southern end of Schoon Lake is an excellent put in for kayak and canoe touring with access to both the lake and the river. Interested campers should paddle to the left and you will come upon the Wakonda Family Campground.
